Plantation
Hunting At Its Very Best
Now you can experience it first hand. Close enough to town for
convenience, yet far enough out in the country for real enjoyment.
Gay, Georgia is only 45 minutes from Hartsfield International Airport in
Atlanta. The only things they have on shooting preserves in Albany
and Thomasville that we don't have on Big Oak Plantation are rattlesnakes
and gnats.
Hunting is one of the many pleasures all sportsmen enjoy, and we offer
much more. The lodge, with three bedrooms and three baths,
accommodates six quests overnight. A regulation pool table and wet
bar are provided for your entertainment. Be sure to bring your
fishing tackle and try your luck in the 25 acre lake, which is well
stocked with bass and bream. Behind the lodge, we have rifle, skeet
and trap ranges to sharpen your eye.
Big Red Oak
Plantation has been family owned for six generations. The original
home, located on a site across the lake from the lodge, burned in the
early 1900's. The old family cemetery still stands. Once
tenant farms covered the 3500 acres, but now pine trees and sage fields
are maintained for wildlife habitat. Where cotton was once the main
crop, feed patches of bi-color lespedeza, partridge peas, clover, wheat,
chufer, millet and other grains are planted.
Arthur
Estes, the present owner is a life time resident and manages the
plantation year round. Mrs. Gladys Lovett, our head cook and
housekeeper, prepares meals fit for a king. Her specialties include
southern fried chicken or quail, pork chops, roast beef with all the
trimmings, and homemade biscuits that melt in your mouth. She will
not let leave the table hungry. Gary Miller, the chief guide and dog
trainer, has professionally trained hunting and field trial champions for
over thirty years. He is also a certified hunter safety
instructor. All of our guides are experienced hunters and dog
handlers. Courtesy and safety are their main concerns assuring that
you will not want to return again and again.
